Jagannadha Rao


The elder of this third generation Garimellas is Jagannadha Rao. Like his father he went to Madras University and took a law degree. He lost his father before he obtained a law degree. So he shifted to Srikakulam to join the office of Pullela Seetharamayya Panthulu. He later set up an office independantly at Srikakulam and practiced in District courts. He was in the Congress party and actively supported the freedom movement. He participated in salt satyagraha held at Gopalapur(Orissa)beach. He was the secretary of the District Inam Ryot Congress and helped thousands ofInam Ryots in securing pattas for the lands in their cultivation. He sheltered the activists of the freedom struggle and procured bail for those who were arrested. He also defended them in the criminal cases filed by the then government against these activists. He served as a Government pleader. He was known to be an authority on land tenures. He has written commentaries on some Law subjects. His work on Estates Abolition was published but his books on Rent Control and Hindu Marriage act etc remained unpublished. He evinced interest in photography and in stage. He took many action photographs of the salt satyagraha in which he has participated. He was known for his wit and humour.
